Dial-up Internet Users May Experience Disconnects

Network users who access the Internet through a dial-up modem may experience an increased number of unexpected disconnects. The disconnects are caused by a very old bug that has resurfaced. Recent posts to mailing lists have pointed out that it is possible to exploit an old error in many modem designs.

How Does the Exploit Work

The exploit works by sending your computer a network packet and tricking it into sending out the command sequence telling the modem to hang up. The modem also may be given any command sequence, including writing new parameters for its default settings.

Which Modems Maybe Effected

The exploit does not work on all modems, but it appears to work on popular modems utilizing chipsets from Rockwell and Lucent.

How Can You Protect Yourself

You can protect yourself by entering the string "s2=255" in the modem AT command string, thereby disabling the modem's ability to respond to "+++" and enter command mode.

Farewell to VM

After over a decade of faithful service, the SLAC VM system is being shut down for the last time. Its functions have been superceded by smaller, faster, and cheaper servers. The last of VM applications have been moved off or abandoned. On Monday afternoon, October 5, we will shut down and power off the system.

The following day we will begin moving the systems off the machine room floor to make room for the new computing systems for the BaBar experiment.
