SLAC Recycling Program - - A Three Part Review of the Program

This is the first segment of a three-part article on the SLAC Recycling Program. This information can also be found on the Web at http://www-group.slac.stanford.edu/fac/recycling/recycle.html. The printed material is provided for those who may not have easy access to the Web.

The following two segments will be published in the future issues of the SLAC Bulletin Board on October 27th, and November 10th.

Introduction

This issue discusses program features of the SLAC Recycling Program for recyclable paper, beverage cans and bottles, and corrugated cardboard. The program is designed to reduce waste disposal and recycling costs. The Facilities Department is managing the program. The program is handled first through your Building Manager and the Facilities Department.

If you have any questions about obtaining additional collection containers or desktop boxes, or about the frequency of collection services, first check with your Building Manager to determine that recycling and safety concerns are properly addressed.

Corrugated Cardboard

To recycle Corrugated Cardboard, please contact your Building Manager to determine how the material is handled in your building or work area. Your Building Manager can help coordinate your needs with the Facilities Department.

Scrap Metals

To recycle Scrap Metals (metals, foils, wires, and other) that come from work areas (not food or beverage cans), please coordinate with Property Control (x2329) to arrange for collection containers, proper separation methods, and pickup arrangements for these or other salvageable items.

Non-hazardous Materials

If you have other Non-hazardous Materials that you wish to recycle, check with the Waste Minimization/Pollution Prevention Coordinator (x3401) or the Facilities Department (x2207). Other materials such as wood, garden waste, and selected construction materials are recyclable but are under special programs managed by the Facilities Department or under special projects managed by University Technical Representatives (UTR).

Hazardous Materials

If you have Hazardous Materials, check with the Waste Minimization Coordinator (x3401) or with Waste Management (x2399) to determine if they are potentially reusable or need to be disposed of as hazardous waste.

Program Features

A major feature of the program is the recycle containers you will see around your building for collecting recyclable paper and beverage cans and bottles. The collection containers are typically green, 32 or 64 gallons in size, plastic, and equipped with wheels and lids. The containers are labeled to help explain which materials can be deposited for recycling.   Please notify your Building Manager to relocate these containers. Keep the lids closed for outdoor containers.

The success of the program involves employees depositing the recyclable materials in the appropriate collection containers.  Employees are encouraged to use cardboard desktop boxes to collect paper and reduce trips to the collection containers. Requests for desktop boxes should be directed to your Building Manager or the Facilities Department (x2207).

If you reside on a second floor, use desktop boxes in your office to collect materials. Periodically, you will have to bring these materials down to collection containers at a first-floor location.

The program involves a combination of janitorial and subcontractor services. In buildings that have containers located indoors, janitors move the containers from indoor to outdoor locations on an as-needed basis (when the container gets full). The janitors bring back an extra empty container from the assigned outdoor location.

Note: The janitors only move containers on level ground and mildly sloped ground, not up or down stairways or other sharp changes in surface.

The recycling subcontractor will only empty containers from assigned outdoor locations. The subcontractor will collect from these locations once per week, usually Tuesdays. The containers are mechanically emptied into a compartmentalized truck that keeps recyclable materials segregated by type - white paper, mixed paper, newspaper, and beverage cans and bottles. Please do not leave materials outside or in front of the collection containers.

The next article titled "Separation of Materials for Recycling" will be available in the October 27th issue. The November 10th issue will address "Common Concerns and Guidance".

New Title for Personnel - - Human Resources (HR)

With the new millennium on the horizon, the Personnel Department is changing its name to the Human Resources Department effective immediately. The HR staff will begin changing all references to the Department from "Personnel" to "Human Resources". Based on our own internal experience, we recognize that this change to Human Resources may not come easily since the other word has been ingrained in our vocabulary. Nonetheless, we request that staff refer to us as Human Resources or HR (when you wish to be polite). We believe Human Resources more accurately describes our work and our department to the SLAC community and beyond.
