Many decisions concerning nuclear weapons are pending, but the U.S. policies governing these decisions are overly broad and are obsolete relics of the Cold War. Only one justifiable mission for U.S. nuclear weapons remains: to deter the use of nuclear weapons by other states. At the same time, many risks of nuclear weapons remain: accidental release, regional conflict and nuclear terrorism. As a result today the insecurity generated by nuclear weapons greatly exceeds their value to U.S. security. Various steps to redress this problem will be discussed.
