Connections between Gauge Theory and String Theory

There is an equivalence, known as AdS/CFT, between string theory in five non-compact dimensions and strongly coupled gauge theory in four-dimensional Minkowski space. The speaker will explain this equivalence, focusing on its motivation and basic formulation. He will also discuss its application to the understanding of four-dimensional confining gauge theories and to aspects of string compactification.
