Optogenetics: development and application

Date: 6/6/2011

Dr. Deisseroth's
Stanford University

Neuroscientists are trying to gain a better understanding of severe mental disorders such as depression, autism, schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. Optogenetics is a precise new way to analyze the brain circuits underpinning mammalian behavior. As a bioengineering research technique, it may be able to obtain insights into how nervous cells operate by selectively pulsing them with laser light via optical fibers.

The speaker, Professor Karl Deisseroth (Stanford MD, PhD) with his team at Stanford University, is a pioneer in developing this technique which is already in use in 800 labs worldwide.
