Microsoft Entourage:mac (2004)

Entourage 2004 offers the best option for Exchange users who run Mac OS X and are seeking to have most of the messaging functionality that Exchange provides.  The Entourage e-mail client will provide access to your Exchange Mailbox, Calendar, Group Calendaring, Global Address Book, and limited access to Public Folders and Delegation.  This is done by configuring Entourage to use the WebDAV protocol (also used by Outlook Web Access) to connect to your Exchange mailbox.  A local cached copy of your mailbox will exist in your Mac OS X workstation with E-mails, Contacts and Calendar items which will be constantly synchronized with the Exchange servers.  This allows for off-line usage of your mail.

It does have limitations in that certain advanced Exchange features such as server-side rules, shared tasks, shared notes, and voting are not accessible and full Public Folders and Delegation are not supported.  In addition, since a locally cached copy of your mailbox is kept in your workstation, depending on the size of your total mailbox, the initial synchronization may take a significant amount of time.  For laptop users, this initial sync process should be done inside the SLAC network.

Configuring Entourage

To set up an Exchange account with default settings, use the Account Setup Assistant.  The Assistant uses the account ID, password, and domain that you provide to automatically detect the correct settings for an account.  However, this may not always work depending on whether you're inside the SLAC network.  If you desire later to exclude some of your contacts or Calendar items from synchronization, you may be able to do so.

To set up your client account:

In Entourage, From the Tools menu, click Accounts.
In the Accounts Dialog box, click on 'down' arrow next to the New button, select Exchange...
In the Account Setup Assistant, click on "Configure account manually" (lower left corner).

In the Edit Account Dialog box; Account Settings tab, fill out the following:
Your Account Name;
Personal Information: Name, E-mail address;
Server information: Account ID (your Windows account ID); Domain: SLAC;
Save password in my Mac OS keychain (if desired);
Exchange server: www-mail.slac.stanford.edu
Place check mark on "This DAV service requires a secure connection (SSL)"; Port 443.
Click OK to Exit.

If you did not save your password, you will be asked to enter your password every time you launch Entourage.  Click on your INBOX under your Account ID to see the mail stored in your INBOX.  All your folders and mail items will be synchronized.

Notes:

  1. You may expand your Account ID to view and list all your folders.  Once in your Inbox folder, you can also customize your view by going to the View Menu, Preview Pane and select your preference.

  2. If you want to specify synchronization settings while you are setting up your account, you must configure the account manually.  You can also configure the account manually after the Assistant has attempted automatic configuration.

  3. Global Address List (Exchange GAL) browsing is possible as long as your MAC OS X is inside the SLAC regular network (internal SLAC's IP address).  This is how you configure your account for GAL browsing:
    From the Tools menu, click Accounts.
    In the Account dialog box, select your Account ID, click on Edit.
    In the Edit Account dialog box, click on the Advanced tab.
    Under Directory Settings, LDAP server: win.slac.stanford.edu
    Place a check mark in "This server requires me to log on".
    Click OK to Exit.

  4. If you also need access to the Exchange Public Folders, fill in the following in the same Advanced tab:
    Public folders server: www-mail.slac.stanford.edu/public/
    Place a check mark in "This DAV service requires a secure connection (SSL)"

  5. Once configured, you may browse the GAL by going to your Address Book (Top left corner icon) and select your Directory Services (under your Account ID).

  6. You will also see the Public Folders as part your Exchange Mail folder tree.

Getting Mail Routed to Your New Inbox

If you have a Unix account you should set up forwarding.
You should also verify that your Mailrouter address is correct.  You can check it here and if it does not say it is sending your email to Exchange, then contact SCCS Help Desk.
