Outlook 2003 IMAP
Outlook 2003 has several modes. Normally we use Microsoft Exchange Server
mode.
But if you prefer to use IMAP mode you can do that. IMAP would be the
appropriate choice for people who's computers are not in the SLAC network (e.g.
at home or another institution).
- Prerequisites
- First you'll need an Exchange server account. If you don't already have one then
send an email to SCCS Helpdesk to
request an account.
- Configuring Outlook for IMAP
- Start Outlook 2003 and select IMAP on the E-mail Accounts page.
- In the next screen you'll enter your name, server, and logon
information. The Exchange IMAP server name is: exch-roam.slac.stanford.edu.
In
this example we are going to be using the secure authenticated SMTP server as
well so we're putting exch-roam.slac.stanford.edu in the Outgoing mail
server box. When done here press the More Settings button.

- Press the Outgoing Server tab and place a checkmark in the box which says
the server requires authentication. Normally we use the same settings as our
incoming mail server.
- Press the Advanced tab and place a check mark in the IMAP SSL box. The port
will change to 993. Place a checkmark in the SMTP SSL box and change the 25 to
587. Then press OK.
- Now press Next and then Finish.
- Starting Outlook 2003 the First Time
- You'll only see the Inbox displayed initially. You add all your other
folders by right clicking on your Exchange Inbox and selecting IMAP Folders.
Uncheck the "show only subscribed folders" box found at the bottom of the window shown here:
- Press OK and you should then see several other folders show up.
Initially there will be no messages in any folder but as you select a
folder the messages will be displayed.
- Getting Mail Routed to Your New Inbox
- If you have a Unix account you should set up
forwarding.
- You should also verify your Mailrouter address is correct. You can
check it here and if it does not say it is sending
your email to exchange server then contact
SCCS Helpdesk.
- Things to Do Early On
- You can use the SLAC LDAP service to provide access to the SLAC
directory to use as your Address Book.
- Tools;
- E-mail Accounts;
- In the Directory section select Add a new
directory or address book;
- Press Next;
- Keep the default of LDAP service;
- Press Next;
- Fill in the server name box with ldap.slac.stanford.edu;
- Press Next;
- Press OK when it tells you'll need to restart Outlook for
the settings to take effect;
- Please go ahead and restart Outlook.
- If you'd like to make this LDAP server the first address book checked when composing email
then do the following:
- Tools;
- Address Book;
- Tools;
- Options;
- Click on ldap.slac.stanford.edu in the
lower window and press the up arrow button on the right side of the window.;
- Then
press OK to close the window.
