PDA Information
This T-Mobile web page tells how to configure ActiveSync on their
devices:
http://support.t-mobile.com/knowbase/root/public/tm22930.htm#top. We
have tested with both the T-Mobile MDA and SDA phones and both work very
well.
- iPhone and iPod Touch with ActiveSync
-
Generally, any PDA or smart-phone which uses ActiveSync can connect
to the SLAC Exchange 2003 server. iPhone and iPod Touch instructions are
here.
- Pocket PC with ActiveSync
- The Dell Axim has been tested and is the recommended technology
for email access while in range of a wireless network.
- Wireless (visitor network)
- If your PDA has Pocket PC with a newer version of ActiveSync
then you'll be able to connect to Exchange 2003 server via wireless
connection. You will need the version of ActiveSync which allows you to
enable SSL for the connection.
- Configuration instructions: ActiveSync; Tools; Options. On the
PC tab: if you choose to synchronize with your PC then enter its
hostname and check the box which says "Sync with this PC during
manual synch" (In addition you will need to configure the VPN
settings - see below). On the Server tab: enter the server name as:
www-mail.slac.stanford.edu; check the SSL box; press Options and
enter your SLAC windows account and password.
- The first time you connect to the Visitor network with your PDA
you will need to register. Bring up the browser on your PDA and
enter the required information if you agree to the SLAC AUP then
press the Agree button and your device will then be allowed onto the
SLAC Visitor network. Your ActiveSync should now be able to
synchronize direct with the SLAC Exchange server. More info on the
SLAC Visitor Network.
- Wireless (VPN)
- When your PDA is connected to the SLAC network via VPN you can
use ActiveSync to synchronize with your Windows desktop and
Outlook.
- Configuration instructions: Settings; Edit my VPN servers; New;
enter name as either ntvpn1 or ntvpn2; then enter the Host name as
fully qualified name (e.g. ntvpn1.slac.stanford.edu or
ntvpn2.slac.stanford.edu); select PPTP; press Next; enter your SLAC
windows account and password; press Advanced. On the TCP/IP tab: use
server-assigned IP address; Use software compression; Use IP header
compression. On the Servers tab: Use server-assigned addresses.
- The above instructions assume you have already registered for
access to SLAC's Visitor Network via your PDA web browser.
- USB
- Install Microsoft ActiveSync on your Windows desktop and your
PDA will be able to synchronize Outlook via USB cable connection.
- Workstation Software
- The Windows desktop ActiveSync software is available here:
ActiveSync 4.2
- Troubleshooting the AXIM
- General Synch Errors on Axim
- If the Axim starts to get errors on the synch with server
then press the reset button on the back of the Axim.
- AXIM error code: SYNC_20
- If you get the following error: "Synchronization failed due to
an error on the server. Error code: SYNC_20" each time you try to
sync your handheld (Axim) with Exchange. Follow these steps to
clear out the local copy of your Inbox:
Start;
ActiveSync;
Tools;
Options;
Server tab;
Unselect the Inbox to clear out the local copy.
Then reselect it and you should be able to synchronize with
Exchange server again.- AXIM error code: INTERNET_157
- You will see this in ActiveSync error screen if you have not
registered for access to the SLAC Visitor Network via the PDA web
browser. Just open the browser application in the PDA and fill out
the form and read the AUP. If you agree then press the Agree button
and you'll be connected to the Visitor network immediately.

capabilities.
- AT&T customers
- No difficulties at all. Just enter the normal POP and SMTP
information as found on the IMAP/POP

- Cingular customers - We've had only one person report using this
and they had
to download a
free 3rd-party product before the reading of email would work.
- General PDA Browser Access
- If your PDA doesn't have ActiveSync with SSL support then you
can still access your email via the PDA version of Outlook Web
