Last Update: July 1, 2002

PCARDs and DSL/Broadband services to the home

As of July 2002, SLAC will change its procurement practices for residential DSL and "broadband"  access (an example of broadband access is Cable Modems) services. These services will be procured centrally rather than individually; individual credit card procurements will be discouraged except in special instances.

SLAC/SCCS will work with you to secure DSL services through Stanford University if your residence qualifies. Otherwise see http://www2.slac.stanford.edu/comp/net/dsl/. The concerns that have emerged with charging to individual PCARDs have to do with: ensuring taxes are not charged; signing up for a long-term contract (e.g. one or more years) and during the contract term the company can no longer provide the services, capturing planning information centrally, providing greater accountability and being able to respond to an audit, providing greater pooling of buying power for lower costs.

For an exemption to allow individual procurements, a justification must be made that addresses those issues. Contact Bob Todaro of SLAC purchasing for further details.
