DSL Service

DSL Service availability to your home and the cost of the various services vary greatly. Equipment capacity,  backlog of orders,  how far you home is from the DSL equipment, lack of technicians, etc.  all play a part in this.  Some DSL providers can complete installs quicker then others in one city but 5 miles away it may take months.

If you have applied for either the PacBell or Stanford DSL service but found that the wait time for the service is too long here's an alternative.

Locate the  DSL providers in your area  that can really bring DSL service to your home. One source of providers is www.2wire.com.  Complete the information on the SearchForm for at least 2 or 3 providers, stating your order of preference.  Use the comment section for extra information.

The information on the forms will be sent to Purchasing who will in turn contact the DSL providers and work with them to arrange an installation.

  • Name of  the DSL provider
    e.g. PacBell, Flashcom, Earthlink, etc
  • Name and  phone number of  the person you talked to
  • URL or their web page
  • Can they give you a real installation date you can live with
It should be no more then 30 days from the time the order is received
  • Do you have to sign up for a fixed term
    e.g. 6 months or 1 year
  •
  • Installation / equipment cost
e.g. $300.00 should be the high limit
  • Monthly service charge
e.g. $60.00 should be the high limit
  • Number of  IP addresses
    e.g. normally 1 or 5
  • Are the IP address fixed or dynamic
  • What is the download or downstream speed
    e.g. 384K-1.5M
  • What is the upload or upstream speed
    e.g. 128K or 384K
  • Number of e-mail accounts
e.g. normally 1 per IP address

* "availability to your home" in this memo refers to a statement by the DSL vendor that they can bring the service to your home in a timely manner.  It does not mean that "it's available in your area or neighborhood".
