SLAC 2-Way Paging Help Area
Call 4357(HELP) or email: helpdesk@slac.stanford.edu if you are having problems with your 1 or 2-way pager.

SCCS is currently beta-testing the Motorola T900 and Pagewriter 2000 (Timeport) series pagers for people who are in need of a 2-way paging service. The T900 is also being issued as a nationwide pager for those who need this service.

This pager is capable of receiving and sending emails and alpha-numeric pages. It also stores all incoming messages on Verizon's servers if the pager is off or is out of Verizon's coverage area. Currently all 2-way pagers carry nationwide coverage.

Service Features: Drawbacks:
Assured Message Delivery
Automatically stores messages when the pager is turned off, when you're changing the battery, or travel outside the coverage area. Automatically forwards messages when you return to the coverage area.

Nationwide Service

Automatic Error Correction
If your pager receives garbled messages, they will be overwritten and corrected automatically.
Frequent Service Interruptions
Verizon's 2-way service is currently very unreliable. We have been experiencing a large number of service outages. These outages result in long delays in message transmission and reception, sometimes up to 8 hours after the initial transmit time from the sender. This service is not recommended for those who need 24/7 critical paging ability.

Short Battery Life (T900 Only)
Depending on how often you send messages from the pager and what kind of message alerts you have set, battery life on typical alkaline (AA) batteries is approximately one to three weeks. Be prepared to buy new batteries constantly or pay for premium Li-ion (Lithium Ion) batteries for longer life. This only applies to the Motorola T900 series pagers as the Pagerwriter 2000 series has a rechargeable battery.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Motorola T900 (Talkabout) and Verizon's 2-way Pager Service

Q. When adding entries to the address book, what are the differences between the address types (wireless address, email address, pager number, etc.)?

A. When adding or editing entries in the address book, there are eight types of addresses that can be attached to each name:

Wireless Address - Entry for alpha-numeric messaging devices. These use the standard email address syntax. Can be up to 40 alpha-numeric characters long. e.g. 6508499999@myairmail.com

Pager Number - Entry for standard numeric pagers. Must consist of the ten digit pager number with no dashes. e.g. 4159999999

Email Address - Entry for standard internet email address. e.g. myemail@yahoo.com

Home, Work, Mobile, Fax/Other Phone - Entries for ten digit phone numbers, again with no dashes. e.g. 6509264357

Notes - Short text notations may be entered here.
Q. When sending messages, why does the pager return the message "Send Msg Failed" and/or display "Recieving Messages?"

A. This can will occur due one or more of the following reasons:

1. The pager battery is low on power, causing the tramission signal to be too weak. Sending messages in areas with weak signals with a battery life of less than 40% is sketchy at best. (To check battery life select "Vital Signs" from the main menu, then select "battery.")

2. You are currently in an area with weak coverage or out of the coverage area. (Areas deep within large concrete buildings, basements, and mountainous areas are considered out of the service area.)

3. Your pager has sent the message succesfully, however it has not recieved a confirmation from Verizon's servers. (This could happen because you are not in a good coverage area, or you have moved to a low coverage area before a confirmation has been recieved.)

4. Verizon's server is down. As this happens without warning, the only thing you can do is wait until they remedy the problem. (Usually within 2-3 hours.)

Q. How long does it take for a message to be sent? A. It depends on a number of factors. First and foremost would be the current condition of Verizon's network. Typically if it is functioning properly, pages are transmitted to another pager in 1-3 minutes. Email messages can take up to 10 minutes, depending on length and network traffic conditions.

Q.
How do I turn off news updates?

A.
Currently there is no way to remove the news updates from 2-way paging services. We are working with a new service provider to see if their service has this feature as well as being more reliable.
Q. Long messages get cut-off after the 4th screen. Is there anyway to view the rest of the message?

A. Yes, it is possible to view the rest of the message. Messages that are too long to be stored on the Verizon server and can be downloaded at any time. If a message is too long to be viewed, it will show a "MORE" message at the very end of the message. To download the rest of the message, select "reply to message" from the menu:

Once inside the reply menu select "MORE:"

The pager will then proceed to download another block of the message (Up to four screens in length.) If there are still unread portions of the message, repeat the steps above to download the rest.

Q. Sometimes messages are garbled. Is there anyway to fix this? (Both sending and recieving) A. No. Garbled text is the result of a poor connection with Verizon. If you are sending a message and the recipient reports that the message is garbled, the only thing you can do is move to another area and resend the message.
Q. Can I change the email address of my pager?

A. Yes, you can create an Alias for your pager's email address. To do this you must go to Verizon's site: http://www.myairmail.com

You can also set the "From" address for your pager (when you send a message it will say it was from this address) as well as forwarding and signatures once you register.

Q. Is it possible for the sender to change the email header when sending from a non-wireless address to a 2-way pagers? A. Yes. Please take a look at Verizon's FAQ on 2-way pager email address domains and their respective features here. Verizon owns multiple internet domains that have differing features. Verizon 2-way pager email address typically use the 10-digit pager number followed by a verizon domain name.
