Caller ID Blocking

SLAC Telephone Users' Guide | SLAC Phone Service Request System (SPRS)

SLAC 23 February 1999

Caller ID Blocking Removed

At the request of several users, we have removed the Caller ID Blocking on the trunks connecting to SLAC's switch in january 1999. Persons who subscribe to Caller ID service can now identify calls as coming from SLAC. Also, persons may now block calls not providing a calling number ID, without blocking calls from SLAC. We have been working with Pacific Bell to complete the changes for about two months now, so persons using these services may have already noticed the changes.

What you will see

What you see on a calling number display depends on your service provider. Some persons may see a message identifying the call as coming from "US GOVT DOE SLAC." Others will see only the trunk number from which the call was made.

Our trunks to the local central office have numbers of the form (650)-854-xxxx, where x is a digit in the range 0 to 9. Calls to San Francisco and East Bay locations may be routed over foreign exchange lines with numbers of the form (415)-543-xxxx. Calls to South Bay locations may be routed over foreign exchange lines with numbers of the form (650)-773-xxxx.

The trunk over which a call is placed is selected by the SLAC switch at the time the call is made. So persons receiving calls from SLAC should be aware that a different number may appear each time someone calls. We have approximately one hundred total trunks which may be used for outgoing calls.

Why we don't show extensions

Our current switch is not able to provide the extension from which a call is placed to the Caller ID service. This requires different capabilities than identifying the extension number of an internal caller, as can be done on our Secretarial phones. The upgrade to support Caller ID to a specific extension on our switch is very costly (several hundred thousand dollars) and we do not have any plans to perform this upgrade.

Why you can't call the number on the caller ID

The trunks we use to place outgoing calls are distinct from our DID trunks that allow us to receive incoming calls and route them directly to a called extension. The outgoing trunks do not accept incoming calls. So persons receiving calls from SLAC will not be able to return a call to the number they see on their Caller ID display. Anyone trying to do so will receive an error message.

Status of lines not connected to the SLAC switch

We have not made any changes to Caller ID blocking on individual lines to Pacific Bell. If you would like the blocking changed on any of these lines, please submit the appropriate order through SLAC's Phone Request System: a FeatureChange order for onsite lines or a Residential request for off-site lines. Be sure to include the complete 10-digit Pacific Bell telephone number and mention in the comments that you want to have the blocking removed.
