To network Windows 98 according to the SLAC standard configuration:
(Note: Windows 95 is not allowed on the SLAC network, since this is no
longer supported by Microsoft.)
Disable Browse Master
If File and Print Sharing is installed:
If a Windows 98 computer has no need to share resources on the network and no need to use resources from another Windows 98 computer, you can remove the File & Print sharing service. The File & Print sharing service does not affect a Windows 98 machine's ability to get to Windows shared resources. If you need to access resources on another Windows 98 computer, you will not be able to see them if File & Print sharing is not installed.
Windows 98 can browse Windows domain machines without the File & Print sharing service, but it cannot browse other Windows 98 machines.
Some Windows 98 machines will come with NetBEUI and Netware installed. NetBEUI will not cross routers. This restriction will limit the information that a Windows 98 computer can obtain and disseminate and will cause problems when combined with Windows 98's browse mastering capability. NetBEUI is not necessary at SLAC but some users prefer it for Remote Access Services (RAS). Netware is not needed at SLAC and can cause problems. For this reason Netware on IPX is by policy blocked at the routers. The SLAC Networking Group requires that both NetBEUI and Netware be removed.
