Windows XP Professional is supported at SLAC.
Divisions should use only Windows XP Professional where this is possible. Where the use of Windows 98 is unavoidable, great care must be excerised to prevent disruptions to SLAC's networks. SLAC-wide guidelines for Windows 98 are limited to ensuring that Windows 98 machines do not disrupt the network. Windows 95 machines are not allowed on the SLAC network, since Microsoft no longer supports this.
If you have to connect a Windows 98 machine to the network, you are expected to follow the stated guidelines below or you will not be given network connection privileges.
For the purpose of establishing a stable networking environment, the SLAC Windows Support has set the following guidelines:
Given the absence of support for Windows 98, the departmental support person's
responsibility for a Windows 98 machine ends with the standard networking
procedure. As a result, this guideline does not pertain to any desktop,
application or other OS settings. The user shall be responsible for these.
