Pugwash is still quite active -- under the able stewardship of a new Secretary General (again an Italian mathematical physicist, Paolo Cotta Ramusino) -- focussing mainly on local conflicts having a nuclear component (India-Pakistan, the extended Middle East, the Far East) as well as on more traditional arms control concerns (such as proliferation -- with the unhelpful signals of continued reliance on nuclear weaponry even by those who do not really need them and would profit most by their prohibition, with Russia threatening to walk out of the INF Treaty...but this is meant to be a birthday card...).

Dear Pief:
On behalf
of the „Amaldi Group“ of the Union of German Academies of Sciences and on my
own behalf I send you our most cordial congratulations on you 88th birthday,
combined with our best wishes for many more fruitful and happy years to come. Without
your initiative and perseverance the Amaldi Conferences would not have come
about during the last phase of the Cold War, with European Academies joining
those of the USA und the USSR to discuss
problems of arms control, disarmament and further questions of global security.
Furthermore, as chair of CISAC, you made sure that US participation in these meetings
was first-class, setting an example to the other participating academies. Unfortunately,
the need for these conferences continues in our less than peaceful world. We
look forward to seeing you at the next, 17th, Amaldi Conference in Hamburg at the end of
this or the beginning of next year. More details will follow.
It is with
great pleasure that I remember my first encounter with you in September of 1955
when I came to Stanford from Germany
to expose nuclear emulsions at the linear accelerator. You were very helpful
and even invited me to have dinner with you, Mrs Panofsky and your five
children in your beautiful home at Los
Altos. Many encounters followed over the years on
various occasions in which you were always a source of reliable information and
friendly support.
Again, many
happy returns!

Dear Pief,
On the happy occasion of your 88th birthday, I would like to extend to you, both in my own name and also on behalf of the entire IHEP staff, my warmest greetings. My colleagues here join me in wishing you many happy returns of the day! Your name is known to all in IHEP, and you are called "Lao Pan" in Chinese, the most affectionate form of address. This is attributed to the special feeling you have been cherishing for Chinese scientists. Since your first China visit in 1976 and the official establishment of governmental cooperation on high energy physics between China and US in 1979, you have spared no efforts in promoting and deepening this cooperation between our two countries. When we review the past PRC/US collaborative efforts, we shall find the big contributions you have made either as a member of the American party or as a senior advisor to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. I am very glad to say that every step forward or success we have made is inseparable from your help in relation to the accelerator construction and the physics experiments. And what gladdens us is that the cooperation forged by you and our other American friends has been expanding, with some remarkable results produced. Although I am far away from SLAC, I do feel like attending your birthday party held at SLAC by sending this greeting. And I wish you a sound health and even greater successes in your future career.

Happy Birthday, Pief, I count myself very lucky to be among the people in the lab who have memories of working under your leadership. It is hard to describe how grateful I am for such an experience. I sometimes wonder if you grow a bit numb to the quantity of praise that is heaped on you so regularly from all quarters. It becomes a challenge for those of us who admire you for what you have accomplished and what kind of a person you are to come up with adequate superlatives to describe you and our feelings about you. One language only supplies us with a few choices of words that are up to the task, and we could use a few more. I can honestly say, that in the thirty years I have been with SLAC, I have never heard a negative comment about you from anyone. If someone challenged me to come up with one, I could think of only one. And that might be that your intrinsic humble approach and modest nature could possibly cause you to fall short of realizing just how deeply, universally loved, appreciated, respected, and admired you truly are, and that you so richly deserve all of it. Many more, Pief.

Dear Pief,
I am very pleased to learn that April 24, 2007 is the red-letter day when you will be 88 years young. Let me join your Chinese friends at IHEP in wishing you many happy returns of the day!
As a very ordinary person, I am deeply honored to have direct or indirect contacts with you in the past two decades. And as a historical witness, I can enumerate the contributions you have made either to the promotion of friendly cooperation between China and the United States in the field of high energy physics, but also to the furtherance of concrete collaborative efforts between SLAC and IHEP. Referring to the PRC/US collaboration on high energy physics, both parties speak highly of it as a two-way street for which you have made your mark, and an important mark at that.
You have made a very deep impression upon me in terms of your noble characters: simple way of living, easy to approach, equal treatment between front-faced fugures and people with low positions, and internationalism.
When we look back at the development of IHEP, it is no exaggeration to say that every step forward is related to your painstaking efforts. We wish you health and look forward to hearing more exciting news from you both in your continued full time work and the furtherance of PRC/US collaboration on high energy physics.

It has been an honor and a real pleasure to know Pief as my professor and a friend for over 50 years. I have learned from him physics and several other important things in life, one of them being how to maintain a sense of humor. During one of the recent visits of Pief and Adele, I said, “Pief, you were younger than half my age I am right now, when I had met you for the first time at Stanford over 50 years ago in 1956.” Adele and my wife Veera both had puzzled looks on their faces. After a moment of contemplation, Adele asked, “Arjun, how is that again?” Pief did quick math in his head and said with a twinkle in his eyes, “Yes, Arjun is right. He is more than twice as old now as I was when he had met me for the first time at Stanford over 50 years ago!”
Yes Pief, using the above criteria, henceforth you shall always be younger than me and I shall always be older than you! May you stay ever young as I get older every day. Best regards and best wishes for a happy 88th birthday from me, Veera and my family. ------ Arjun |

Happy Birthday Pief!
I do want to wish you a happy Birthday and many happy returns! Also, I want to thank you (and your wife) for your friendship. Little do you know the profound affect you have had on my life. Little did I know what the future held when my initial major professor, Jesse DuMond, at Cal Tech said, "I have a son-in-law up at Stanford who just got a contract and is building an accelerator! Why don't you meet him and look for a job up there?" Ten years of my life at SLAC working in a wonderful environment (Pief's environment!), to me is beyond explaining. The ten years are only for remembering and appreciating as one of the great blessing in my life. I sincerely want to thank you for all your support and influence on my life, which, of course, did not end at ten years! I am sure I lack knowledge of your many accomplishments, but for those that I do know about, I have come to appreciate you for your contribution to science, for your technical leadership, for your contributions to our country, and to the world, thereby, making it a better place to live, etc. But most of all happy birthday and thanks for being my friend!

Dear Pief!
Please, accept the warmest regards and best wishes of your extremely long time Novosibirsk "Round Table" friends (and, of course, my personal ones)!
You are always in our hearts.
Please, transfer our greetings to Adele.
Hope to greet you again at Novosibirsk, at SLAC, and at any other place of the World.

| HBD Pief!
At a recent town hall meeting soliciting the characteristics needed for the next Director, everything was mentioned short of walking on water and parting the Red Sea. My summary, almost as unrealistic, was one word: Pief-like. So old friend, congratulations and thank you for every unseen, unremarked thing you have done for so long!

Dear Pief,
It was so enriching and uplifting to have you and Adele in Hamburg last summer. I wish we could have more such occasions.
May your birthday be filled with joy when listening to Mozart, tasting chocolate and meeting old and new friends.
Best wishes and heartfelt greetings to you and Adele
from your "Vaterstadt" Hamburg

| Happy Birthday PIEF. If it hadn't been for your efforts, Sir, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to work at the Laboratory for 27 years. It was a gas. |

Dear Pief,
You were the first scientist I knew. You still are the standard by which I judge all others. If Roz and I could be at the party, we'd sing you Happy Birthday in 2-part harmony!
