Game Highlights
SLAC's Annual Softball Game was held October 5 at Stanford's Roble Field.
Scoring was fast and furious in this first rematch between the Accelerator and Research teams as Research sought to erase the memory of its 38-10 defeat the previous year.  Ryan Auer set the tone early with an over-the-fence home run in the first inning and Research got off to a quick 8-3 lead.  Accelerator came back in the 3rd inning with a 3-run homer to deep left field by Ken Herman.  But Research answered with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning with Ryan hitting another long fly, this time off the center field fence for a double and his 3rd RBI of the game.  Accelerator narrowed the Research lead slightly in the 4th inning, and then exploded for 14 runs in the 5th to take a commanding lead.  Most notable of the many hits that inning was Herman Winick's discovery of new bat technology to propel a deep fly ball past the left fielder with the bases loaded and record a remarkable grand slam.  Research then fought back with slow determination.  Ryan got a solo homerun to deep center in the 5th and then Research found its bats again in the 6th inning scoring 11 runs and narrowing Accelerator's lead to just 1 run.  After the 7th inning stretch, Research added 3 more runs to recover the lead and go up by 2 runs.  However, the  Accelerator team quickly re-grouped and scored 3 runs in the top of the 8th to reclaim the lead.  The go-ahead run came with with runners at 1st and 2nd and Herman up to bat to get the game-winning RBI.  Accelerator added one more run in the 9th and then held off Research in the bottom of the inning, with Mike Woods and Howie Haber, representing the potential tying runs for Research, left stranded on base at 2nd and 3rd.

Bill Kirk MVP Award

The Bill Kirk Most Valuable Player Award went to Herman Winick for Accelerators. Herman contributed a grand slam to the Accelerator barrage of 14 runs in the 5th inning, and then got the game-winning RBI in the 8th.
