Game Highlights
Research and Accelerator had both garnered 4 prior victories and each sought
supremacy with a victory in the 2015 game. Accelerator looked to have a
stronger team and outnumbered Research players by 15 to 10 as the game was
about to get underway. But some players sought better parity - so it was
decided the lab's Chief Safety Officer, Brian Sherin, and his son Noah could
personify the "One Lab" policy and directly support Research. And so
they moved from the Accelerator lineup to Research. Then on a beautiful
October day, SLAC's Annual Softball Game got underway!
Accelerator won the bat toss and took home field with Research batting first.
Ryan Auer scored the first run of the game for Research, but Accelerator got 5
hits and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 3-1 as the first
inning ended. It was a magnificent day for hitting -- Research recorded
27 hits, including over-the-fence home runs by Ryan Auer and Brian Sherin, and
Accelerator clobbered out 36 hits including out-of-the-park homers by Mark
Anzalone, Kevin Turner and Jeff Corbett; and an inside-the-park homer by Bill
Liebelt. Brian Sherin led
Research with 5 hits, co-captain Ryan MacLellan and pitcher Tim Daniels each
had 4 hits (3 triples and a double for Ryan, 4 singles for Tim), and a
number of Researchers recorded 3 hits each: co-captain James Cryan + Ryan Auer,
Howie Haber, Ian Williams, Tsutomu Matsui, and Rick Shypit.
For Accelerator, Jeff Corbett led the way with 4 hits as did Brian Anzalone,
Bill Liebelt, Kevin Turner, and Steve Liebelt. Matt Cramar, Mark
Anzalone, Rick Jackson and Gene Anzalone each had 3 hits.
But it was
also a day for some stellar defense, especially with force outs at home plate
(2 each by Accelerator and Research) and then in the late innings as the
lead see-sawed back and forth. Leading off in the bottom of the 8th
inning for Accelerator, Jeff Corbett hit a scorcher to deep center field which
look destined to clear the home run fence. Research co-captains Ryan
MacLellan and James Cryan raced to meet the ball with Ryan arriving there
first and just in time to snag the ball near the top of the fence and record a
critical out. Ryan and James went on to make another out in the 8th, 2
key catches on deep fly balls in the 9th inning and another in the 10th.
Between them Ryan and James
recorded 10 outs. Not to be done by their outfielders' heroics however,
the Research infield was also solid anchored by long-time short stop Howie
Haber. The Research infield made 2 key double plays in the game -- one to
keep Accelerator scoreless in the 2nd inning and then, most importantly, in the
bottom of the 10th inning to end the game and give Research a 1-run victory!
Bill Kirk MVP Award
Ryan
MacLellan
was awarded MVP. Ryan excelled on offense and defense, battling

Game Notes
In a special pre-game ceremony Stanford Softball T-shirts were presented as a
wedding present to Ryan MacLellan and Yuanyuan Su MacLellan from the SLAC
Spinors softball team. Ryan and Yuanyuan married in Nova Scotia, Canada
this past summer.
Special thanks to Heather Woods for photo taking and to the scorekeeper Laurel Woods! This year was the 3rd
time the Annual Game has gone to extra innings. In 1999, Experiment
defeated Theory 8-6 in 11 innings. And in 2006, Experiment prevailed
21-20 over Theory -- an identical score to this year's game, and also in 10
innings.
