Game Highlights
This year's game was held November 3rd, the latest date ever for the annual game and the first time it's been held in November. The weather gods were with us fortunately, providing a fabulous warm, sunny afternoon at Arrillaga Field. Research came into the game exuding confidence, boasting a 7-5 record against Accelerator and having won the two previous matchups in 2017 and 2018. Accelerator won the bat toss though to secure home field advantage. Their defense limited Research to just one run in the first two innings. Coming to bat in the bottom of the 1st, leadoff Accelerator batter Kevin Turner promptly smashed a home run. Erick Schlimmer and Mark Anzalone then added 2 more solo home runs in the 1st and Accelerator went ahead 3-1. In the 3rd inning the Research offense started to produce, scoring 4 runs and they took a lead they would hold onto until Accelerator tied the score at 6-6 after 5 innings. The score was still tied 6-6 at the 7th inning stretch, but then the offense for both teams came alive. Accelerator scored one in the bottom of the 7th to go ahead by a run. Their lead was shortlived however, as Research responded with 3 runs in the top of the 8th inning. Not to be outdone, Accelerator exploded for 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take what they hoped was a commanding 4-run lead into the 9th. Research proved tenacious though with leadoff batter Matt Windeler singling and subsequent hitters loading the bases for Mike Minitti with just one out. Minitti doubled and suddenly Research was down by just a single run. The next play was an infield out and Minitti advanced to 3rd, bringing slugger Hans Steinrueck to the plate with two outs. Hans already had 3 hits in the game and proceeded to hit a sharp grounder down the 3rd base line. Kevin Turner was playing him deep behind 3rd and managed to snare the ball, then fire to first for the 3rd out and end the game. An exciting win for Accelerator and a great game, well played by both teams. Starring offensively for Research were Mike Minitti, Peter Walter, Hans Steinrueck and Matt Solt. Scott Kaminski and Kevin Turner provided solid defense at shortstop and 3rd base that were key to the win, together with great hitting and home runs by Kevin, Erick Schlimmer and Mark Anzalone.
Post-game, players
gathered at the Dutch Goose
for beer and food, and for discussing game highlights and aspirations for next year's
game.
Bill Kirk MVP Award
Kevin
Turner starred both on offense and defense. He was leadoff batter for
Accelerator and started his team's hitting with a solo home run in the bottom
of the 1st. He added two more hits in the game and scored two runs.
Defensively he made several putout throws to first from third base, including
a long throw to end the game with a Research runner on 3rd threatening to
score and tie the game.
