Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI)
2007
The SLAC SULI program is an 8-9 week summer internship at the laboratory for ~25 students. It consists of:
§ Work experience in a research-related assignment
§ Lecture series
§ Possibly some Tours
Twenty five students are selected from a large pool of applicants. The students are from diverse institutions and backgrounds. The participants have majors in the areas of science, engineering, mathematics, and computer science.
MEETING YOUR STUDENT
SULI Participants will meet their mentor(s) at a luncheon on Monday, 6/25/07 in the A & E courtyard.
After the first week, there will be approximately two lectures or tours per week. Lectures will usually be Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00 – 5:15 pm at a SLAC conference room. Topics include high energy physics, photon science, astrophysics, accelerator physics, and general talks on other science and engineering topics.
RESPONSIBILITIES PRIOR TO PROGRAM START
FIRST WEEK 6/25 – 6/29
Students will have introductory lectures and tours the first 2 days and half days of lectures Wed afternoon (computing) , Thurs morning (Astrophysics), and Friday morning (Photon Physics). They will be available to work with you the rest of the time.
Note that by Thurs morning they should be computer literate.
Beginning on 6/27/07 the SULI participant’s day will be spent working with a research or technical group at varying levels in the day-to-day work of the groups to which they are assigned. (Note the lectures the first week and on Tues and Thurs afternoons). The SULI participant will present an oral report (which you are invited and encouraged to attend) and submit a paper at the end of the program describing their research project.
