PEP-II on Track to
Nearly Double BABAR Data Sample

SLAC set an ambitious goal for run 4 of the PEP-II
accelerator: 100 inverse femtobarns. An inverse femtobarn measures the
intensity of the beams, how frequently they cross, and how long the run
lasts. If this goal is reached, the data sample of the BABAR
collaboration from the first three runs would be nearly doubled by July
2004.

Gateway Program Trains Hispanic Students to Use

border every morning to her graduate lab at the University of Texas, El
Paso (UTEP). The trip north takes 80 minutes since 9/11, but only 20
minutes south, back to her hometown of Cuidad Juarez.

APS Fellows New Members

The American Physical Society (APS) has issued its list of the newest
members to be elected to Fellowship. Each new fellow is elected after
careful and competitive review and recommendation by a fellowship
committee on the unit level, additional review by the APS Fellowship
Committee and final approval by the full APS Council.

NLC R1 Goal Met and Exceeded

On December 4th, the NLC 8-Pack —designed to test
components under development for the NLC—demonstrated operation of the
SLED II dual-moded pulse compression system with a power of 475 MW and
pulse length of 400 ns.

2003 Bandwidth Challenge in Phoenix, Arizona to capture the Sustained
Bandwidth Award for the most data transferred.

2003 Run, Walk ‘n Roll (and Juggle)
The 32nd Annual SLAC Run, Walk ‘n Roll was held on
Thursday, November 20. The event was a smashing success with 83 runners,
three skaters, 31 walkers, and one juggler, who also ran.
