Spisula clams

Two sandstone casts of Spisula clams, still retaining some of the original shell material. The two hinged shells have been preserved in their closed position, which indicates that they died while still buried in their burrows. Clams that are removed from the sand by predators or some other action, die and are found with their two valves open or separated. Note that some of the other clam specimens exhibited here are also closed.
