Annual SLAC Softball Game

The annual Theory vs. Experiment softball game was held on Saturday, 29 September 2001, at Roble Field on the Stanford Campus. Game time was 10:00 am. Experiment, led by Captain Mike Woods, put up a strong fight defending the Drell-Richter Trophy while Eva Silverstein valiantly led the Theory Team effort.  The final score was Experiment 19, Theory 12 - see box score below. A short game summary follows; this will be replaced with the full story and photos shortly.

Theory put up a formidable team.  They were tactically brilliant, forcing a late season game to assemble a talented squad and bringing the game back to its roots with good representation from campus. Eva Silverstein made her inaugural appearance as the Theory sage and motivated a novel t-shirt by one of her students for the game - setting the precedent for the first team uniform.

Experiment was dazzled, but not to be outdone. Paul Depietro lead the way to an MVP performance with 2 big home runs, while newcomer Ed Hill hit a grand slam in the 6th to follow Depietro's 3-run homer earlier that inning.  Toshi Abe exemplified the stellar fielding of the day by both teams with a brilliant sliding catch in right field and throwing runners out at both 3rd and home plate.

Thanks to Nina Stolar for orchestrating the post-game party at Sid and Harriet Drell's home on campus, and providing the photography and statistician support.  We look forward to web updates and photos soon.  Send nina@slac.stanford.edu any memorable notes from the game!

Thanks everyone for a great season!  We'll resume with practices next spring and then Intra Murals start in June 2002.

- Mike Woods, Experiment Captain
