Game Highlights
The game was held October 28. A warm, sunny fall afternoon greeted players and guests as they arrived at SLAC's Arrillaga Field, overlooking the Bay.
Research won the bat toss and selected home field advantage. Accelerator batted first, but its leadoff hitters were largely stymied by the Research defense. Accelerator managed just a single run in the top of the 1st with leadoff hitter Matt Cramar scoring on a single by Erick Schlimmer. Research then brought 9 players to the plate in the bottom of the inning and scored 4 runs off 5 hits. Research's defense continued strong in the 2nd inning and didn't allow a run. Accelerator's defense responded in the bottom of the 2nd by recording 2 quick outs on infield plays. James Cryan then instigated a 2-out rally with a double. Tsutomu Matsui and Matt Windeler followed with singles, bringing up Mike Minitti who proceeded to blast a 3-run homer. As the 2nd inning ended, Research had scored 4 more runs and enjoyed an 8-1 lead. Accelerator's offense continued to sputter through the rest of the game. Erick Schlimmer tried to breathe life into it with a leadoff home run at the top of the 5th, but the next 3 batters went down in order. The final score was 13-5 in favor of Research. Research batters recorded 23 hits, led by Kevin Turner with 4 while Matt Windeler, Omar Moreno, and Howie Haber each contributed 3.
This year's game was dedicated to Burt Richter who passed away in July. He and Sid Drell started the tradition of an Annual Theory vs Experiment Softball Game when SLAC was formed. In 2007, Theory and Experiment teams joined to form the Research team that now competes against the Accelerator team. More info and a tribute to Burt here.
Post-game, players
gathered at the Dutch Goose for
beer and food and to watch Game 5 of the World Series (the Red Sox defeated
the Dodgers to win the title).
Bill Kirk MVP Award
James
Cryan, captain of the Research Team, was recognized as the game MVP.
James went 2 for 3 hitting, including a key double in the 2nd inning, and
anchored the outfield with several key catches to help stifle Accelerator's offense.
