Windows Terminal Server at SLAC

Windows 9x and NT client printing
     Automatic printer redirection
Connecting to NT Network print queues
Adding drivers for client based printers

Unix client printing
Client printer auto-mapping not available for UNIX

Windows clients automatically map existing printers on the workstation to the ICA session. This would include printers attached to local ports (LPT1, LPT2, etc.), if this is not happening on your NT workstation, let us know so we can debug the problem.

UNIX clients (LINUX too) do not automatically map their locally attached printers. IF the printer you are trying to print to is serviced by an NT print queue, follow the instructions below to connect to a NT network printer

IF the printer you are trying to use is not serviced by a NT queue, we can add the IP port to an existing NT print queue (on PCDATA or another print server).  This only applies to printers on site, LPR will probably goes through the firewall at SLAC.

Connecting to NT networking print queues

Each user has sufficient privileges to add network printers to their profile. Follow these steps:

1) Log on the farm and select a User Desktop (either one)

2) Open / Double click the desktop icon My Computer (on the Terminal Servers it is the Computer Icon which is labeled "{your username} on {computer name}" i.e.. "gregg_daly on SLACWTS01")

3) Open the Printers folder

4) Click Add Printer

NOTE: Users DO NOT have the privileges to add "local" printers BUT you should be able to attach to any existing NT print queue in the domain(s) you have privileges

NOTE#2: Windows clients automatically map the existing printers on your workstation to the ICA session, remapping these is not needed.

NOTE#3: LPD/IP printing is currently not installed and users do not have the rights to add the ports and local printers for LPD. If this needed (your printer is not serviced by a NT queue) let us know and we can add the service during the next service outage. (requires a reboot) After the LPD service is installed, an admin can create the IP port and add the printer.

5) The only available selection is Network printer server, click Next

6) Type in the Printer path (i.e. \\andromeda\qmscgb3a) in the text box or locate the print queue you need in the Shared Printers list box. After typing the path or locating the printer, click OK

7) The wizard will prompt you whether or not you want the printer to be your default printer. If you select YES, this printer will become you default printer for every WTS session (user desktop or a published application). If you click NO, it will be available in the list of printers you have installed, but just not the default printer.

8) Next windows, you should receive a message that the network printer has been successfully installed, click FINISH.

9) Repeat Step 4 through 8 for every printer you want to install for your WTS sessions.
